One can describe the first impression of this doom-country sound: wide landscapes full of noise and rhythmical structures, lonely guitar patterns powered by the black sun of oriental melancholy. However, there are two clauses. Noise music had become an efficient factory for producing canvases or abstract matrices with superimposed layers. Were Landing As They Fell (further - wlatf) chose a few other basic points to proceed from.

Firstly, wlatf onslaughts melodism. The displacement of noise layers suggests the accumulation of internal melodies, and not the annihilation of figurativity. The interactions of the sonorous multitudes lead to compositional effects. Counter-figurativity becomes a requirement of multiplying internal micro-events. But such a strategy is not enough to emancipate the sonorous. In case of wlatf, a simple melodic landscape is divided into composite effects. Separate parts are reflected in stereo channels, disseminated by delays into paranoid sequences, distorted with noise filters, or tied in loops as in knots.

Secondly, during wlatf’s sessions, singular fragments of melodies become rhythmic characters. Sometimes the number of rhythms in the track is critically superfluous: several constellations are fighting for their own autonomy. Everything happens here and now. All the sounds come from metal strings of a bass guitar, torn by a chain of effects into pieces.

One of the persistent principles of wlatf’s work is live recording. In the space of the session, linear time undergoes constant distortion. Singular rhythmic clots make up a field of differences and repetitions, in which several tempos can coexist and be grasped as rhythmic folds or intervals between various sequences.

The sonorous minefield, the shell holes of rhythms, rushing noise wind. Referring evidently to the traces of the ur-punk movement (from krautrock to post-punk), as well as to the avant-garde experiments of La Monte Young, wlatf’s output is a kind of a drone assemblage. An “unfree improvisation” with the shreds of rhythm-noise dismantling the melodic boundaries of western compositional cliches. Thresholds of hum-machines disrupt disciplined listening, entangling the trajectories of discursive imperialism and making all its authorities and ghosts become traces of vibrations.
